AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

Prologue

Almost always, especially early on, I told each of my three sons, “I can tell. Someday you are going to be an awesome dad.”

Then, almost every night after hugs and kisses, I turned off the lights and said, “Good night! I love you! See you in the morning.”

Each repeated back the words exactly as I said them. Except for Taylor, who with dyslexic echo said, “See you in the morning! Good night! I love you!”

Curious twist, I thought.

All throughout their younger years there was a quiet voice inside my mind, my heart, whispering but clear, Be sure to say this every night. Because it is a promise from both of us. No matter what life brings, you and your sons will always and forever see each other in the morning.

When I heard the voice, I shuddered, then quenched it with the thought, This is nothing more than what all parents fear. Of course the worst is possible. But we are careful. The worst is far from likely. Stuff like that only happens to people who are not careful or the unlucky few. And after all, worst-case odds are very, very slim.

And so my mind, confident in the odds, told the worry in my heart to just shut up.

Chapter One: Hard News (Nashville, Thursday, June 3, 1999)

Hi. This is Brian, Taylor’s dad. I’m using Taylor’s e-mail because his address book is more up-to-date than mine. After Taylor finished chemotherapy last February, he was given a battery of tests, including an MRI and CT Scan. Since then he’s had monthly x-rays of his chest. Two days ago, he was given a second round of scans. Yesterday, at about three in the afternoon, one of Taylor’s doctors called. He told us that new scans show four nodules on the left lung and another on the right. The cancer is back.

The Tumor Board at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital is meeting as I write. They are mapping out a strategy for the renewed battle that lies ahead. Immediately after yesterday’s call I went home, cried with Debbie, then exercised and showered. I also shaved my head. Again.

And all the while I wept and raged, shamelessly pleading with God.

About an hour later, while Debbie worked the phone calling friends and family, recruiting prayers, I went to find Taylor. He was at his best friend’s house just down the block. The two of them were playing on Nintendo 64. Standing at the front door of our neighbor’s house I said, “Hey, buddy. I need to talk with you. Would you walk home with me?”

“Well… okay, sure! See ya later, Trey.” He was happy as a lark.

Skipping at my side down the middle of the street, he suddenly noticed. “Hey Dad, you shaved your head again! How come?”

Silently I prayed for help. “Yeah. Kinda felt I had to.”

Unfazed by my elusive answer, Taylor chose to tease. “So why’re you out here? Shouldn’t you be doing something with Mom? After all, today is your twentieth wedding anniversary!” His question was full of impish innuendo. And he seemed to sense a need to make me smile. I tried to comply, but knowing his skill at reading my heart, I quickly changed the subject.

While we walked I made an impromptu promise. “Guess what? Just today I made a decision. We’re gonna get you a brand-new, state-of-the-art laptop, one with all the bells and whistles—like tons of memory and a DVD-drive!” The laptop he’s used for a year doesn’t belong to us. And at the ancient age of four, it’s a technological dinosaur. Taylor was thrilled with the news.

“Yes, yes, yes! So when’re we gonna get it? Huh? Huh?”

I chuckled, pleased with his euphoria. “Pretty soon. Prob’ly in the next two or three weeks.”

“Yahoo!”

When we reached our house, instead of going in, I directed him to a seat in the front yard. Underneath a large shade tree, we sat atop a green metallic box shielding an electrical transformer for our neighborhood. Still excited by the promise of a new computer, Taylor looked at me, curious by my silence, by the dissonance he felt. Finally I spoke. “Well, buddy, I’ve got news. Good news and bad news. The good news is what I just toldja about the new laptop…”

O God! Help me do this…

“The bad news is that one of your doctors called this afternoon…” I paused and said no more. I didn’t have to. His jaw dropped.

“It’s back, isn’t it?” he whispered.

I didn’t say a word. Instead I just moved closer and put my arms around him. Taylor buried his face in my chest and bawled while I baptized his head with large, hot drops falling from my eyes.

Taylor’s birthday is tomorrow, on Friday, June 4. He turns eleven. A huge party is planned. On Saturday and Sunday, Taylor is supposed to be on TV helping host a telethon in a local effort to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. And for at least a month he’s counted down the days until his Hickman catheter will come out. He’s had these tubes dangling from his chest for a year. With the Hickman gone and treatment over, Taylor’s summer is full of plans: uninhibited swimming, three camps, and a nostalgic visit with old friends in Dallas—a school-free time when they can really play. Then after summer ends, he’s thrilled about going to a new school where he knows the work will be harder.

Now, at best, these things are uncertain. Most are dreams destroyed. And all in less than sixty seconds. As our tears subsided, still sitting in the front yard underneath a tree, Taylor started asking questions.

“Will I still be able to go to my summer camps?”

“Don’t know. Prob’ly not all of ‘em, anyway.”

“What about school this fall?”

“Don’t know. We’ll just have to see what happens.”

“What will the doctors do now?”

“I have a few guesses, but… I don’t know. We should find out tomorrow.” We prayed, then went inside the house and cried with Mom. As Debbie hit the phones, dialing for defenders who would pray, Taylor and I went upstairs and lay down on his bed. I put my hand on his chest and sometimes stroked his new blond hair. I knew his too would soon be gone. Again.

Such a heart breaking journey for such a small child. A child with the strength of a lion....trying t be strong for friends and family. He didn't want anyone to know how afraid he was.

I can only imagine how his family struggled with God.

This is an amazing story of a boy too young to have cancer. His fight. a brave one, many battles lost. He loses so much and never gives up. This is a true inspiration....when you can stop crying. I wish these children were never afflicted, but that isn't for me to decide. Taylor never gave up, He still did everything the same and never slowed down. Such a trooper. I am telling you. This is a wonderful read. Don't read it in front of your hubby if he doesn't like to see you cry....you will... or at least I did... almost every page.

5 stars! A must read.

Amazingly Wonderful News.

Some of you may know (if you follow my tragic life blog at xanga) that my hubby has been trying to adopt my 3 girls. He has raised them all (with me of course). We have spent over $15,000 we didn't have battling for one. We won that battle, after 6 years of pain and worry.

The latest endeavor was for my youngest 2. I found out today that the papers were mailed to ex hubby 10 days ago. Hopefully, he got right on it and signed and notarized them. I am hoping to see them around Tuesday of next week. HOPEFULLY! My attorney said he will make a follow up call with the x to make sure everything is on track. Then we can get the home study, and finish this. We will all have the same last name! It has been a long journey, but it is almost over. Praise the Lord.

Free Download Thousand Foot Krutch

You can go here to get a free download of Bring me to life by Thousand Foot Krutch. They are a christian rock band so buyer beware. LOL! I am a rocker at heart so we Love them! Thanks for the tip One Tightwad Momma!

Any Ideas?

I need a clever idea.

As most of you know, I have 5 children from 12-4 years of age. They all have their own Nintendo D.S. As you can imagine we have about 20 games floating around somewhere in this house. I need a creative way to keep up with them. When organizing their Wii, PS3, Gamecube, Nintendo 64, and Super Nintendo games (old School right! That's how we roll) I used shoe boxes and Cd/Dvd cases. D.S. games are so small and hard to keep up with. It seems as though they are always getting lost.

Any storage Ideas that will work for about 20 of them? Thanks guys! I Heart Mario!

Don't forget the D.S. game Giveaway going on here!

A Redbox Tutorial

Hi Everyone!

I have gotten several comments and emails asking what Redbox is. Here is an explanation of Redbox with a bunch of helpful links.

Redbox is a Kiosk inside various Businesses like Wal~Mart, Walgreens, Gas Stations. and some are even out in public areas. Find out if you have a Redbox near you here. You can search within a 20 mile radius.

Now, every Monday redbox sends out a text message to customers with a code for a free nights rental. You can sign up here to have it sent to you, and get a free code by email.

Go to your local Kiosk and push the button on the touch screen that says rent with a promo code at the bottom. It will then prompt you to enter the code. From there, you can search through that kiosk's contents to find a movie you want. Add it to the cart and proceed to the checkout. When checking out, you will be asked to enter your zip code and email address (to help prevent fraud). Lastly, it will prompt you to swip your debit or credit card.

What is cool about Redbox is that if you have several different checking accounts with debit cards or credit cards, you can use each of them with the free code. Just repeat the above steps using the same code but swiping a different card at checkout.

Free Codes are only good until 11:59 p.m. on Mondays. The movies you get with the Redbox free code must be returned the next day (Tuesday) by 9 p.m. or they will charge $1 to the card you swipped. If you fail to return the movie, you will be charged $1 everynight up to $25 + tax. After that the movie is yours. If you are negative in your account the Redbox will not let you rent a movie.

New Releases are out every Tuesday.

The best part of Redbox is that rentals are only a dollar per night if you don't have a free code. Much cheaper than the video stores, and you don't have to wait on the mail like with Netflix. So that is pretty cool.

Sometimes RedBox will have extra free codes during the week. Last month they had an extra code every Wed. on their blog, Redblog. They are also know to have contests for prizes and free rentals. So check that out too. $1 Movies are great, but Free is even better!

Here are a few of my favorite Redbox free code sites: Inside RedBox and Free RedBox

I hope this was helpful to you guys. If you want to publish this on your own blog to help other's feel free. I just ask that you give me props and link back to me. Leave me a comment and let me know if this was helpful.

Thanks~

Jen

Redbox Free Movie Monday!

It's that time again. Free Movie Monday! Today's free code is 4CW33N

What you want to do is go to your closest redbox kiosk and touch 'rent with promo code' Then browse and select. Head to the checkout and get your movie.

Be sure to return it by 9pm tomorrow or they'll charge you a dollar and that defeats the purpose. Also, don't forget...If you have more than one debit/credit card each card can be used for the code for multiple free movies as long as returned on time!

Review: The Noticer by Andy Andrews

Book Description

A moving story of common wisdom from the bestselling author of The Traveler’s Gift.

Orange Beach, Alabama is a simple town filled with simple people. But they all have their share of problems – marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy, and many of the other obstacles that life seems to dish out to the masses.

Fortunately, when things look the darkest – a mysterious old man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up. Communicating what he calls “a little perspective,” Jones explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things that others miss. In his simple interactions, Jones speaks to that part in everyone that is yearning to understand why things happen and what they can do about it.

Based on a remarkable true story, The Noticer beautifully blends fiction, allegory, and inspiration.

My Opinion:

This is an amazing book. It is short and sweet, yet still moving. Reading the word given to others by Jones is so enlightening.I found several examples of myself and how I can change. I also learned a lot about me. It is a smoothly written book that will show you just how little we know about ourselves and the others around us. Sometimes we just want someone to notice. This books releases today I believe, I might be off a few days. 5 stars. It is a book everyone should read. It isn't a self help book. It is just a story, but it is a story that will make you take a second look at yourself. Buy it Borrow it....just read it!

Review: Follow Me by Joanna Scott

Synopsis:

On a summer day in 1946 Sally Werner, the precocious young daughter of hardscrabble Pennsylvania farmers, secretly accepts her cousin's invitation to ride his new motorcycle. Like so much of what follows in Sally's life, it's an impulsive decision with dramatic and far-reaching consequences. Soon she abandons her home to begin a daring journey of self-creation, the truth of which she entrusts only with her granddaughter and namesake, six decades later. But when young Sally's father--a man she has never known--enters her life and offers another story altogether, she must uncover the truth of her grandmother's secret history.

My Opinion:

This book has a good story. Not great mind you just good. I enjoyed the parts that were about Sally's life and hardships. It was very entertaining.

As far as the other stories... I skipped so many pages out of sheer boredom. I'm not really a page skipper, but aside from Sally, I found the other characters flat and blase`. This book hardly held my attention and it was everything I could do to finish it. I was not very impressed. I would have liked the book more if the granddaughter and father has been omitted.

It is an okay read. It is very smooth and flowing. I won't tell you to rush out and get it tomorrow, but if you find it on sale I'd grab it. I give it 3 stars.

MY Opinion:

I love this game. I am actually having to chase down my 4 girls and make them do "chores" so I can play it! I know I am so terrible, but this is fun. My favorite game is the Picture Taker. You have to try and take gooed pics of the Characters in a fashion show and people stand infront of you. So here I am sitting on the couch alone, and I am yelling at my D.S. "SIT! SIT!"
I have never had so much fun. The kids keep beating my high scores!

There is so much to do in this game. It isn't one of those you buy and then beat it in a few hours. I have had it for about 5 days and we havent even unlocked everything yet. We haven't even unlocked all the minigames! The girls are loving it. Even my 4 year old {heartbreaker A} plays it. Her favorite minigame is Cake Making. I love that one too!

I loved everything about this game. It is fun and challenging. It's for everyone! I am 27 years old, and I love it and so do all of my children. I even caught my 10 yr old step son playing it 3 times! don't tell him I told! It is such a fun game. I can't wait to see what we unlock today! If I can get it away from the kids! A definite must buy game!

Blog Tour: Scattered lLeaves by: Richard E. Roach

SCATTERED LEAVES VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR '09

Join Richard E. Roach, author of the suspense mystery novel, Scattered Leaves (Multi-Media, Sept. '08), as he virtually tours the blogosphere in April on his third virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion!

Suspense/Mystery author Richard Roach was born in 1931 in Galveston, Texas. Short stories of his have been published in Man’s Story 2, Happy 2007, Vol. 20 and Bibliophilos 2006, Vol. 42. His first novel, Scattered Leaves, hit the book stores on September 1, ’08, and his second novel, Scattered Money, will be published in 2009.

You can visit his website at www.richarderoach.com.

When Ben McCord comes home from a business trip to find his young wife raped and murdered, he starts out on a journey of death and destruction. Clues lead him to a dark world of drugs and violence in action that spans Texas, Colorado, and the Mexican border. McCord hooks up with a beautiful doctor, who was also victimized by members of the same drug cartel, and together they track down the killers, surviving bloody confrontations, and ending with a suspenseful climax in the Big Thicket of Texas.

I found her on the floor near my side of the bed, nude, lying in a pool of inky-black, coagulated blood. She was dead. Cold dead. A long time dead. The words seemed foreign.

She had worried about her twenty-ninth birthday, which was coming up soon; she had been concerned that being nearly thirty might be getting old. She had been fretful about too many things: not having rugs beside the bed, the poor people at church, when would the roof start leaking. All those worries had taken wing when her heart had stopped
beating and her blood ceased to flow.

I could not share with her the final pain of her last moments on this earth. She would forever be twenty-eight.

The smell of death permeated the bedroom air.

She had never been a big person, but in death she seemed shrunken. A glob of caked blood held a dozen strands of her silky, blonde hair and was stuck to her temple. The swollen, black tongue protruded from her mouth. She looked at the world from behind eyelids that were almost closed.

I am so excited to read this book. I can't wait until it gets here!

The 7 Great Prayers has already touched the lives of people all around the world. Now it can do the same for you.

This powerful book guides you through seven simple yet life-changing prayers. These prayers are for all people and all faiths. Authors Paul and Tracey McManus show you how to overcome life's challenges, get closer to God, and attract blessings into your life through the power of prayer.

The Story Behind The 7 Great Prayers

Paul and Tracey McManus lost everything in the wake of the dot-com bust -- they had no jobs, their savings had evaporated, the bill collectors were banging on the door, and they were losing their home. They were scared and paralyzed with fear.

One sleepless night, Paul and Tracey began to thank God for what they did have. They had their health, they had each other, and they had three beautiful children.

When they prayed, they focused on their blessings rather than all they had lost and were losing.

This prayer of gratitude was lifechanging. Newly inspired, Paul and Tracey sat down and -- based on Paul's lifetime of spiritual reading and their shared experience -- they created six more simple prayers. These prayers gave them the hope and strength they needed to overcome life's challenges. Eager to share their newfound hope, Paul and Tracey created a simple Web page about The 7 Great Prayers and they wrote a book about them. Soon over 20 million people from across the globe visited the Web site.

The Right Book . . . The Right Time

As word spread, Paul and Tracey received orders from 163 countries for their originally self-published book. These powerful prayers changed the lives of people of all nationalities and faiths. They gave them hope, kept them positive, and deepened their love for life. And thus, the grassroots phenomenon that is The 7 Great Prayers was born. Now The 7 Great Prayers is here to do the same for you.

Author Bio

They have made it their mission to teach others how to live abundant and blessed lives by tapping into the power of God and the power of the mind through The 7 Great Prayers. My opinion:

This is a great prayer book to help you establish and/or deepen your prayer relationship with God. I really enjoyed it. It shows great ways to pray. This book even had 2 pages you can copy and fold together to keep with you. You can even hand them out to your friends. The topic range covers most of the hardships we face in today's society. It is very comforting. I like how it has a 21 day challenge inside to help you stay on track. It is easy to keep up with, and moves and a nice pace. Over all I would give it 3 Stars. Definitely one to check out.

Come on Monday....

I am taking a book reading break. This weekend I'll be out of state visiting my Grandma. I miss her so much!

I would like to ask everyone to pray for my dad. You won't hear me talk about him very often. Sore subject don't ask. Any hoo... He has a 100% blocked artery in his in his lower abdomen. He will be having surgery on Monday for it.

Also, {Angel T} my dyslexic daughter, is having major problems in school. Her grades are falling fast, and she is having trouble grasping concepts. It is an emotional drain on all of us because I don't know how to help her. I am meeting with her teacchers tomorrow to see what we can do. I chose to hold her back in the first grade, and don't want her to fail and repeat the 2nd grade. They have also screened her for A.D.D and I am trying to talk myself into making her an appointment to have a therapist eval her. I am afraid of what they will tell me. Above all, I don't want my child medicated if there are other options. PLEASE BIG Prayers for {Angel T}

Monday I will be posting a review and startin a giveaway for a Nintendo D.S. Game! WOOOO HOOOO... I can't wait. I'll see you guys on Monday.

AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

One year ago my mom got traded in for a newer model.

And that’s when my life fell apart.

“Do you, Jillian Leigh Kirkwood . . .”

Standing by my mother’s side as she marries the man who is so not my dad, I suppress a sigh and try to wiggle my toes in these hideous shoes. The hideous shoes that match my hideous maid-of honor dress. I like to look at things on the bright side, but the only

positive thing about this frock is that I’ll never have to wear it again.

“. . . take Jacob Ralph Finley . . .”

Ralph? My new stepdad’s middle name is Ralph? Okay, do we need one more red flag here? My mom is marrying this guy, and I didn’t even know his middle name. Did she? I check her face for signs of revulsion, signs of doubt. Signs of “Hey, what am I thinking? I don’t want Jacob Ralph Finley to be my daughter’s new stepdad.”

I see none of these things twinkling in my mom’s crystal blue eyes. Only joy. Disgusting, unstoppable joy.

“Does anyone have an objection?” The pastor smiles and scans the small crowd in the Tulsa Fellowship Church. “Let him speak now or forever hold his peace.”

Oh my gosh. I totally object! I look to my right and lock eyes with Logan, the older of my two soon-to-be stepbrothers. In the six hours that I have been in Oklahoma preparing for this “blessed” event, Logan and I have not said five words to one another. Like we’ve mutually agreed to be enemies.

I stare him down.

His eyes laser into mine.

Do we dare?

He gives a slight nod, and my heart triples in beat.

“Then by the powers vested in me before God and the family and friends of—”

“No!”

The church gasps.

I throw my hands over my mouth, wishing the floor would swallow me.

I, Bella Kirkwood, just stopped my own mother’s wedding.

And I have no idea where to go from here. It’s not like I do this every day, okay? Can’t say I’ve stopped a lot of weddings in my sixteen years.

My mom swivels around, her big white dress making crunchy noises. She takes a step closer to me, still flashing her pearly veneers at the small crowd.

“What,” she hisses near my ear, “are you doing?”

I glance at Logan, whose red locks hang like a shade over his eyes. He nods again.

“Um . . . um . . . Mom, I haven’t had a chance to talk to you at all this week . . .” My voice is a tiny whisper. Sweat beads on my forehead.

“Honey, now is not exactly the best time to share our feelings and catch up.”

My eyes dart across the sanctuary, where one hundred and fifty people are perched on the edge of their seats. And it’s not because they’re anxious for the chicken platters coming their way after the ceremony.

“Mom, the dude’s middle name is Ralph.”

She leans in, and we’re nose to nose. “You just stopped my wedding and that’s what you wanted to tell me?”

Faint—that’s what I’ll do next time I need to halt a wedding.

“How well do you know Jake? You only met six months ago.”

Some of the heat leaves her expression. “I’ve known him long enough to know that I love him, Bella. I knew it immediately.”

“But what if you’re wrong?” I rush on, “I mean, I’ve only been around him a few times, and I’m not so sure. He could be a serial killer for all we know.” I can count on one hand the times I’ve been around Jake. My mom usually visited him when I was at my dad’s.

Her voice is low and hurried. “I understand this isn’t easy for you. But our lives have changed. It’s going to be an adventure, Bel.”

Adventure? You call meeting a man on the Internet and forcing me to move across the country to live with his family an adventure? An adventure is swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean. An adventure is touring the pyramids in Egypt. Or shopping at the Saks after-Thanksgiving sale with Dad’s credit card. This, I do believe, qualifies as a nightmare!

“You know I’ve prayed about this. Jake and I both have. We know this is God’s will for us. I need you to trust me, because I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life.”

A single tear glides down Mom’s cheek, and I feel my heart constrict. This time last year my life was so normal. So happy. Can I just hit the reverse button and go back?

Slowly I nod. “Okay, Mom.” It’s kind of hard to argue with “God says this is right.” (Though I happen to think He’s wrong.)

The preacher clears his throat and lifts a bushy black brow.

“You can continue,” I say, knowing I’ve lost the battle. “She had something in her teeth.” Yes, that’s the best I've got.

I. Am. An. Idiot.

“And now, by the powers vested in me, I now pronounce you Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Finley. You may kiss your bride.”

Nope. Can’t watch.

I turn my head as the “Wedding March” starts. Logan walks to my side, and I link my arm in his. Though we’re both going to be juniors, he’s a head taller than me. It’s like we’re steptwins. He grabs his six-year-old brother, Robbie, with his other hand, and off we go

in time to the music. Robbie throws rose petals all around us, giggling with glee, oblivious to the fact that we just witnessed a ceremony marking the end of life as we know it.

“Good job stopping the wedding.” Logan smirks. “Very successful.”

I jab my elbow into his side. “At least I tried! You did nothing!”

“I just wanted to see if you had it in you. And you don’t.”

I snarl in his direction as the camera flashes, capturing this day for all eternity.

Last week I was living in Manhattan in a two-story apartment between Sarah Jessica Parker and Katie Couric. I could hop a train to Macy’s and Bloomie’s. My friends and I could eat dinner at Tao and see who could count the most celebs. I had Broadway in my backyard

and Daddy’s MasterCard in my wallet.

Then my mom got married.

And I got a new life.

I should’ve paid that six-year-old to pull the fire alarm.

My Opinion:

Funny Funny Funny. If you haven't noticed I love Young Adult books. They are just so much fun, and this one is no different.

Poor Bella Kirkwood! Raised in a life of privilage, she must now Trade it for the farm! Like that isn't enough, she also has a new family and her old one seems to no longer have time for her, What is a girl to do? She just can;t catch a break.

Poor Poor Bella. This child is spoiled beyond anyting I have ever seen. Now she has to move from her home in NY to OK! Well, Everthing is not Ok in Ok.

Bella is somehow so wrapped up in her sob story that she manages to alienate the entire school (and Town), lose every friend she had made on the first day, and get kicked out of class. That requires skll.

It is a good time to watch this child start to realize that she is so spoiled that people can't even tell she is a Christian. Bella learns to put the past behind her to help others and play by the rules. This child won't make it unless she learns humility.

I thought this book was great. It was fun to read and a little like watching a train wreck. I love to watch her converasations with God. To see her struggles and see her overcome them. I had a fun time reading this book, and it is one I wouldn't mindletting my own (very Spoiled children) read.

The Locked Garden by Gloria Whelan (Children's/ Young Adult)

Synopsis:

It is the year 1900 and, fresh from their mother’s death, Verna and her sister Carlie accompany their father to their new home, on the sprawling grounds of the mental asylum where he works. Though they had hoped that their hardhearted Aunt Maude would be left behind, she insists on coming along to care for them. When thier father hires Eleanor, a troubled young woman from the asylum, as their maid, the girls befriend her—but as Eleanor draws futher and further into herself, the girls have to decide what, if anything, they can do to help her.

My Opinion:

I hate this book! With a passion! I know, strong words build strong weapons. I will not let my children read this book. What we have here are 2 completely spoiled children. I understand they lost their mom 2 years ago. I do. These children are off to get whatever they want when they want it. They don't care who they hurt! As for Eleanor, the children are part way responsible , in my mind, for her being sent again to the asylum. It is their thoughtless action that start her decent. Sure, they do a few good things but very few and far between. At the end of the book, the children still have not learned anything, and are still trying to get what they want no matter who they hurt. I do NOT recommend this book at all.

Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff (Young Adult)

Synopsis:

Annie Richards knows there are a millions things to looks out for—bicycle accidents, food poisoning, chicken pox, smallpox, typhoid fever, runaway zoo animals, and poison oak: That’s why being careful is so important, even if it does mean giving up some of her favorite things, like bike races with her best friend, Rebecca, and hot dogs on the Fourth of July. Everyone keeps telling Annie not to worry so much, that she’s just fine. But they thought her brother, Jared, was just fine too, and Jared died. It takes a new neighbor, who looks plain as a box of toothpicks but has some surprising secrets of her own, to make Annie realize that her plans for being careful aren’t working out as well as she had hoped. And with a lot of help from those around her—and a book about a pig, too—Annie just may find a way to close her umbrella of sadness and step back into the sunshine.

My Opinion:

I love this book. It deals so well with greif and the fear that follows it. Following Annie, your heart bleeds for her. I just want to hug her and say,"You'll be okay. It just takes time." Too bad I couldn't. I think this book is a great Young adult book. Not just for children grieving, but for those who aren't. It never hurts to tackle such a subject with our children, and this is aa great book to do it with. No Language, violence, nothin' but a good read!

Review: Ottoline Goes to School by Chris Riddell

Ottoline and Mr. Munroe are at it again in the latest installment: Ottoline Goes to School.

Ottoline and Mr. Munroe are walking at their local park when Ottoline makes a new Friend. Cecily tells the greatest stories, and her and Ottoline start to spend a lot of time together. Soon, Cecily has to go back to school. Ottoline decides to write her parents and see if she can go too.

Halirity ensues as the girls arrive at the "Haunted School" where everyone has a special gift. Will Ottoline solve the case of the Haunted School? Will she find her gift?

This book was just too cute and so funny. It teaches that everyone is different. Even though we are not all good at the same things, we all have special gifts. Never give up on finding your gift. It is full of great pics for the kiddos to look at as you read it (try to find all the hidden ghosts). It can also teach us parents a thing or two about making time for our children. A great Children's book. I recommend it.

Review: Jansten's Gift by Pam Cope with Aimee Molloy

Synopsis:

Nine years ago, Pam Cope owned a cozy hair salon in the tiny town of Neosho, Missouri, and her life revolved around her son's baseball games, her daughter's dance lessons, and family trips to places like Disney World. She had never been out of the country, nor had she any desire to travel far from home.

Then, on June 16th, 1999, her life changed forever with the death of her 15-year-old son from an undiagnosed heart ailment.

Needing to get as far away as possible from everything that reminded her of her loss, she accepted a friend's invitation to travel to Vietnam, and, from the moment she stepped off the plane, everything she had been feeling since her son's death began to shift. By the time she returned home, she had a new mission: to use her pain to change the world, one small step at a time, one child at a time. Today, she is the mother of two children adopted from Vietnam. More than that, she and her husband have created a foundation called "Touch A Life," dedicated to helping desperate children in countries as far-flung as Vietnam, Cambodia and Ghana.

Pam Cope's story is on one level a moving, personal account of loss and recovery, but on a deeper level, it offers inspiration to anyone who has ever suffered great personal tragedy or those of us who dream about making a difference in the world.

My Opinion:

I really don't know what to say. This Book is AMAZING. If you need a reality check/wake up call... This is it! I told my hubby if he could read to page 50 and not shed one tear... I would install our wood flooring alone! This is one of the most emotionally stirring books I have EVER read.

Pam Cope suffered a horrible tragedy that no one should ever have to go through, and it almost cost her family, sanity, and her life. She needed purpose. Pam had always felt she had a higher calling, but never knew what it was. It is amazing to read how the tragic loss of her son led her to save hundreds of children from certain death., children rescued from human trafficking and orphanages in terrible conditions. This is a story of her struggles.

Wanting to help children overseas, this ordinary woman used money donated in her sons memory to eventually found the Touch A life Program. Her foundation has partnered with many to build villages to educate and save children. She has single handedly fought tooth and nail to get a medical visa for children who would have died without coming to America for help. Mrs. Cope has done so many wonderful things after giving up so much.

It is amazing how a housewife from a small town can make such a huge impact. I can never imagine seeing the things she has, nor can I imagine living through her personal tradgies. I cannot recommed this book enough.

After reading this you will want to help. You can go to the webiste: Touch A Life:
And read an excerpt from the book. If you donate $50, they will send you or one of your friends a signed copy of the book! That would be an awesome gift.

Things you can do to help:

1.Make a donation. Even 5 dollars can do a lot!

2.Buy the book from amazon.com. They will receive a protion of all profits.

3.Educate yourself and others.

This is an amazing organization. Please visit their website.

Review: One Deadly Sin

All I can say is Wow! Books and movies are usually easy to figure out. Makes for a boring read. NOT this one. It was GRREAT.Following Edie Swann through her journey of vengance and fear was wonderful. We get to see her hatered, anger, pain, and we watch her fall in love. .

Edie, a rough and tumble womna, has come back to the small town she once loved for informatin and revenge. After her father's mysterious death 20 years earlier, her family was left broken and abandoned by the town. She must know why, and she really wants to stir the people involved up. With her list in hand, her journey begins.

Edie gets back to the place where it all started. This is where it will end. She puts her plan into action. Soon, her victims start to end up dead! Can Edie figure out who is behind these murders? Maybe it isn't anyone. Maybe it is something supernatural. She better or she will spend the rest of her life in Prision!

This is a Romance/Suspence. Usually I don't read romance. I don't care for it. The stories are usually weak and filled to the brim with sex.

Not this one. There are 4 or so sex scenes (which are hot hot HOT!). Very descriptive!

But it is an awesome story. Very well written and flows so smoothly. This book kept me guessing until the end. It is full of twists and turns and kept me captivated I LOVED this book. I had never heard of Annie Solomon before. Now, I am a huge fan. I saw from her website that she has written several other books. I can't wait to buy them!

Review: Behold The Eye Trilogy by Veronica Tabares

Note: Mrs. Tabares has graciously provided a copy of her trilogy for giveaway. Each of the three books are signed! (HOW COOL!) Please stop by her website and tell her How Awesome we think she is at A Bookish Mom! The Giveaway will start within the next week or so.

Synopsis: (from the website)

Dreams are funny things. Some of them are strange concoctions created by sleepy brains, blended images which rapidly switch directions and send the dreamer on a roller-coaster ride through the imagination.

Other dreams act more as guides. They solve mysteries, figure out problems, and uncover hidden jealousies. Wake up in the morning after one of this sort and you miraculously remember exactly where you left those keys you couldn’t find yesterday. That twisted math problem that had been unsolvable suddenly becomes clear. And most importantly, you finally understand why your best friend said that malicious remark that devastated you at lunch.

But only a very few fortunate (or maybe unfortunate) souls get to experience the rarest dream of all. For this brand of dream has no connection to the imagination and does not occur in the human head. Instead, it happens in a realm of its own…in the baffling, mysterious, and dangerous land of dreams.

Thousands of years ago, a culture thrived in the Pacific Northwest. Today, there is no sign of this flourishing culture. The entire city, with the exception of a few stray survivors, suffered a cataclysmic event that ripped apart the fabric of the universe and pushed them, buildings and all, into another dimension.

So what happens when someone discovers how to travel through the land of dreams, and the lives of our world become entwined with those of the other dimension?

My Opinion!:

This is a Young Adult Series.

After agreeing to review these books for Mrs. Tabares (wonderfully sweet person), I got really excited for them to get here. I love reading Young Adult books. From the Chronicles of Narnia to A series of unfortunate events, I have always loved the magic involved in capturing a child's imagination.

I must say, I was NOT disappointed. From the begining I was captivated by the details and story line of this book. I followed Vickie and her friends on a whirlwind journey through worlds, and was so upset to read the final page of the final book.

It Starts in Braumaru:

Vickie and her friends are like any other 6th graders...
.. Bored. If they only knew what was coming. These children uncover unimaginable talents, all the while watched by a very sinster man with very sinster plans. Everything is fun a nd games until someone falls deep into a coma and then vanishes into this air. With notrace left will the others be able to save their friend from an endless slumber?

On to Cerulea:

Vickie awakens to find herself in another world. While amazed at the beauty she still wants to go home. The only problem is... she doesn't know how to get there. With the Aid of her new strange friends vickie sets out for Cerulea to find a way home. Once again she finds herself wrapped in the horible plans of the terrible man that helped bring her here. Will she ever escape his clutches?

The journey continues to Viridia:

Vickie has been gone for months now. Her friends are ready to give up, and her mother is wasting away with worry. With the help of her new friends vickie searches out help in the last place she can. This place is dangerous. It is filled with hungry animals, and people that could hurt her.... Will they?

Vickie finds herself trying to escape the clutches of the evil man again. This time he is stuck in his own trap, and so is one of Vickies school friends. Can she be saved before it is too late? What happens when the evil man's daughter gets involved?

I love these books! There is no Language! No Sex! No Physical Violence! These books are wonderful! They deal with dreams and dream traveling between worlds. I had such a great time reading them. Now my kiddos are clambering to read them!
There was NOT one thing I disliked about the trilogy!

Kinda Like free rice dot com!

This is from their About Us tab on the website:

AIDtoCHILDREN was developed based on a desire to help under privileged children in the most impoverished places around the world.

Children are often the first victims of war, disease and disaster. Children, who need the most protection in society, end up with the least. Poverty is unkind and brutal, particularly when it affects children, and it manifests in physical, emotional and social ways.

Poverty is: a child unable to pay the fees to attend school; an orphaned child whose parents have died of AIDS; a child sold into slavery; a child whose bones weaken from malnutrition; a child who must live in unsafe and unhealthy surroundings; a child who does not receive nurture, love and support.

Not only do children living in poverty struggle for basic survival, they are also deprived of a childhood, of intellectual stimulation and the opportunity to realize their personal aspirations.

One billion children in developing countries suffer from at least one form of severe deprivation. The seven forms of deprivation are lack of adequate food, safe drinking water, sanitation, health, shelter, education and access to information.

The goal of AIDtoChildren.com is simple, bring aid to children in need through learning.

This Site Donates a Quarter for each correct answer! Cool! So go check it out before you let your kid play. I'd say it is for 3rd grade and up. Don't forget parents tell your schools. Make it a Challenge...just don't forget to let them win sometimes!

I have a senseo machine, and I love their coffees! The only problem I had with them is getting the strength right. I am a sissy and don't like strong coffees. It only took me 2 cups to get it just right. They have many different blends and flavors, and I buy mine at Walmart! The pods are about $4 a bag which is a little expensive, but you can use Folgers pods or generic in this machine too. I am glad I bought one. If you want me to refer you, they will send you a code for $30 off a new system.

Please just leave a comment with your email addy or email me at livingmyhappilyeverafter at yahoo dot com and I will refer you. If you email me please put in the subject "Senseo" . I do not know if they will continue to email you after this refferal so use your own judgment. Most companies have an opt out link at the bottom of the page if they do send unwanted emails.

Review: Dad, Dog, Fish by Charles Emery

Please visit the website here and tell Mr. Emery how you can't wait to read his book.
Synopsis:
"Dad, Dog and Fish" is a memoir about my life with my Dad and Bunkie, my yellow Labrador Retriever wonder dog. The story begins in 1960's Southern California and ends in a 1723 stone farmhouse in South East Pennsylvania, deep in Amish country. This memoir is the story of the life of a simple man that loved family, life, humor and animals (especially dogs). This memoir is a
humorous recount of that life that confronts serious issues as well as philosophical outlooks.
My opinion:
I LOVE THIS BOOK! It was great. I laughed, cried, and gawked in amazement all at the same time! This is one of those down home country boy stories that will just warm your heart. I in all reality will read the book again. I laughed at the dad and his isms. I loved the dog (Bunkie). I mean to tell you I just loved this book. I felt so good and lighthearted after I read it. I had no trouble getting into the book. This is one that I would spend the time going to buy! It is just great....No sex or dirty nastiness.
Now, saying that, Here is what a didn't like. There is light Language. Very light. Like I have said I am a bit of a prude. Mr. Emery talked about the "boys" or the dog's "Family Jewels" too much for my taste! That is the only thing I didn't care for. So minor it doesn't even bother me that much.
I did love this book. I do recommend it. It is just a story about a good ole' country boy, his dog, and his dad. It just takes you back to those days of running through a pasture to a pond. Fishing pole in hand and ready to catch some dinner. I enjoyed it so much (I'm a country girl). I hope you all like it as much as I do.
In the near future you may have a chance to win this book. Well see what I can do.

Well, Ladies I am back...

After my rehabilitation, I didn't get much Reading done. I had a lot of pain, and can still barely open my mouth. My hubby is so happy! lol. I have to call the surgeon tomorrow to make sure everything is ok. Other that that I am great, and hope all of you are as well.

I hope everyone had an awesome Easter.

My hubby started moving everything in our living room out. He tore up half of the carpet and is putting in wood floors. Underneath the carpet was the ugliest tile I had ever seen! It's pretty bad. I'll take pics tomorrow and post them. It is horrid.

Just wanted to let ya'll know I am feeling OK and I'll be back to posting now. We have a great opportunity coming our way soon! MYSTERY!
