Review:Word of Promise Next Generation New Testament MP3 Set

Word of Promise Next Generation New Testament MP3 Set

International Children's Bible - Audio Version

Synopsis:

Now the entire New Testament is ready for the Wired Generation.

Today’s youth ingest media at a faster rate than any previous generation. And they can’t get enough! The Word of Promise: Next Generation - New Testament is the perfect way for young multitaskers to absorb Scripture. This ambitious recording makes the Word accessible to more kids than ever before.
Starring a Hollywood-level cast of young talent including Cody Linley (Hanna Montana, Dancing with the Stars) as Jesus, AnnaSophia Robb (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as Mary Magdalene, Jordin Sparks (American Idol Winner) as Elizabeth, Cobin Bleu (High School Musical) as Peter, Alyson Stoner (Cheaper by the Dozen) as Martha, and narrated by Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings). The project includes informative book introductions by author Max Lucado and his daughter, Jenna Lucado, who is a speaker on the Revolve® Tour.
The Word of Promise: Next Generation is much more than just a word-for-word reading: it’s an all-star cast performing audio drama with a rich original score and Hollywood special effects. When Jesus walks on the water, kids will feel like they’re in the boat. When Peter waits in the courtyard during the Lord’s trial, the fire will crackle. The ambient sounds of the Holy land, the breath-taking musical score, the world-class young actors and the timeless Word of Promise all combine to deliver an unparalleled achievement.
Set includes 24 hours of audio drama on 3 mp3 CDs and a bonus 75 minute Behind-the-Scenes DVD featuring interviews with the actors.

My opinion:

I never rave about anything. I hardly ever tell anyone they must buy something....

But I absolutely 100% LOVE this!

It is a GREAT tool for children and adults alike. Packed with stars that children know, this version puts feeling and emotion into the bible.

My daughter (one of the 4) is 8 and has dyslexia. Reading the bible is almost impossible for her and she can't understand 95% of what is read. This is perfect for her. She can listen to it and understand much more. She doesn't have to stop to guess, struggle, and sound out words. She is asking so many questions now. We can easily pause and discuss what was talked about at anytime without losing our place.

It was such a chore to read the bible together. Getting them to sit still and pay attention to my hubby's monotone (and amazingly boring voice) was mission impossible! Now the kids are excited about it! It is easier for my husband and I as well. I hate to admit that a lot of times I will skip over passages because I get bored. These Cd's keep me entertained. I am not making excuses to do something else or getting easily distracted.

This CD set inspires great conversations between parents and children. I highly recommend it!

I am a big fan, and I wish I had the complete set (like for mother's day. Tell my hubby). It is definitely worth the money!

There is one thing I don't care for. It isn't New King James Version. It is the International Children's Bible Version , but it is very easy for the children and I to both understand. This is one I do actually suggest. It is wonderful!

Review: A Quiet Flame by Philip Kerr

Book details:
  • Hardcover: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Putnam Adult (March 19, 2009)
  • Language: English

Synopsis:

A Quiet Flame opens in 1950. Falsely fingered a war criminal, Bernie Gunther has booked passage to Buenos Aires, lured, like the Nazis whose company he has always despised, by promises of a new life and a clean passport from the PerĂ³n government. But Bernie doesn’t have the luxury of settling into his new home and lying low. He is soon pressured by the local police into taking on a case in which a girl has turned up dead, gruesomely mutilated, and another—the daughter of a wealthy German banker—has gone missing. Both crimes seem to connect to an unsolved case Bernie worked on back in Berlin in 1932. It’s not so far-fetched that the cases might be linked: after all, the scum of the earth has been washing up on Argentine shores—state-licensed murderers and torturers—so why couldn’t a serial killer be among them?

But Argentina, just like Germany, holds terrible secrets within its corrupt halls of power. When beautiful Anna Yagubsky seeks Gunther out, desperate for help, to find out what happened to her Jewish aunt and uncle who have disappeared, he is drawn into a horror story that rivals everything he has tried so hard to leave behind half a world away.

In this new postwar world, Bernie Gunther is a man without a name or a country, but still in full possession of his conscience. He is “the right kind of hero for his time—and ours.” (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review)

Discalimer:

Let me start of by saying that I give honest reviews. I don't rave about something unless I really love it. Please keep that in mind. I will not rave about something just to make a Person feel good about their work. Getting a work published should do that already.

My opinion of the book:

First off, let me say that I have not read the previous books in this trilogy. This is the first book I have read by Philip Kerr.

This book jumps around from story line to story line. I don't mind that so much, but there are so many stories in this book, that it is hard to keep them all straight. Not to mention the jumping back and forth in time from the 1950' to the 1930's. I really liked the original plot. The story was very well written. Watching Bernie Gunther trying to solve an old case tied in with a new one was a great story. The book jumps back and forth to find the culprit of a murder that happened 20+ years earlier in Berlin. Now, it seems, the murderer has resurfaced in Buenos Aries.

The murders are eventually solved, but rather anti-climatically. Along the way, several other story lines are thrown into the mix. While they are decent plots, Kerr adds at least 3 more toward the ending of the book. It all becomes a a little hard to remember which character was doing what to whom and why. The other cases are solved in the manner as the first... very casually. It really left me wanting more action and conflict. There were some great action scenes in the book, but I wish it would have carried throughout the book. It all felt a little rushed. I would have enjoyed more depth.

With all of that being said... Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It is a well researched story with strong characters, and a great original story line. (I am trying not to reveal too much here, guys. I don't want to spoil it for you.) There is some sex (not really detailed), foul language is used lightly, and a great deal of violence. Remember, part of the setting for this story is during Hitler's reign of terror. There is a lot of Anti-Semitism.

It was hard for me to get into this one. I tried to read it for at least 4 days and only made it to page 130. I really took it in last night and finished it. It didn't pull me in with in those first 130 pages.

I do recommend it. It was a good story. On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the best) I think I would give it a 3.75. So, when you have some spare time...read it and judge for yourself.

What happend to "service with a smile"?

You have to go here: http://www.tosaveapenny.com/2009/03/i-was-called-thief-today.html

And read what happened to Amber today at her neighborhood Walgreens. How atrocious! Is anyone else floored at this like I am. I can not imagine being called a thief for sing coupons! Let alone being called one in front of other people! There is just no excuse for that nonsense.

With today's economy, we have to be "frugal" just to survive. Most of us are not rich! Well, we aren't anyways. I just can't believe that someone would accuse a loyal customer of being a thief for using coupons to get the best deal.

I think Amber should call the district manager and corporate office to complain.

Has anything like this ever happened to you? What did you do about it?

Review: The Read and Share Dvd Bible Volume 1

Thanks to Thomas Nelson Here: http://www.thomasnelson.com/consumer/
I had a wonderful opportunity to review the The Read & Share DVD Bible - Volume 1.

Synopsis:

The Read & Share DVD Bible - Volume 1
13 Stories from the Old and New Testament
By

Share the joy and wonder of God's Word with the children in your life.

Thirteen essential lessons of scripture starring the Bible's best-known characters. The Read And Share™ Bible on DVD combines an enchanting art style with a warm narrator and gentle musical underscore to transport kids back to Biblical times. The bite-size vignettes are perfect for the attention span of little ones, and give parents maximum flexibility to fit any time-frame.

Stories include: The Beginning, Adam & Eve, The Flood, Abram, Isaac & Rebekah, Jacob & Esau, Rachel, Jacob & God, John the Baptist, Jesus is Born, Jesus is Tempted, Jesus Love Children, and One Lost Sheep
My Take:
I like it. It was entertaining. The stories were easy to follow and a great source of knowledge. It teaches children on their level like a Sunday school teacher would. It is a great learning tool to teach your children bible stories and spark discussions. The music and images are calm and soothing. It didn't make my kids bounce off the wall!
The best part is... The kids loved it. They sat through the entire program, and were entertained the whole time. It is so easy to use too. My four year old loaded and started it by herself. How great. I think it is a wonderful dvd. It lasts an hour so you can definitely get some peace and quiet. 2 thumbs up.
Go check it out at the above addys... They even have a buy link. Enjoy!

Review: Guardian by Julius Lester

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Pub. Date: October 2008
ISBN-13: 9780061558900
Sales Rank: 239,310
Age Range: 12 and up
129pp

Synopsis:

"There are times when a tree can no longer withstand the pain inflicted on it, and the wind will take pity on that tree and topple it over in a mighty storm. All the other trees who witnessed the evil look down upon the fallen tree with envy. They pray for the day when a wind will end their suffering.
I pray for the day when God will end mine."

In a time and place without moral conscience, fourteen-year-old Ansel knows what is right and what is true, but it is dangerous to choose honesty, and so he chooses silence.

Now an innocent man is dead, and Ansel feels the burden of his decision. He must also bear the pain of losing a friend, his family, and the love of a lifetime.

Coretta Scott King Award winner and Newbery Honoree Julius Lester delivers a haunting and poignant novel about what happens when one group of people takes away the humanity of another.

My opinion:

Guardian by Julius Lester is a moving read. Not only is this novel about lynching, but also identity. Whose opinion matters most to us? Ours? Our neighbors and Friends? Whom and with what we identify ourselves with defines our character. It shows who we really are on the inside, and who are we if we don't stand up for truth and justice.

Set in the Summer of 1946 in a small southern town, a small boy watches a horrible history unfold before his eyes. Only 4 people know the truth.... himself, his father, the accused, and the real culprit.

I can only imagine how torn Ansel must have felt throughout the many situations of the book. Loyalty to his father, mother, friend, and the truth must have nearly pulled him in half.

While the book is short having only 119 pages, I couldn't put it down. It was a very engrossing novel.

I did have a few problems with the book. I do understand the setting and time. I know an author must be real to the story. The "n" word is rampant throughout this book. For that matter, so is sexual imagery. They also use the " Gd" word more than a few times. I hate those words. I find it hard to tolerate their use in a book that is geared for 12 and up children.

It is a great book to read, but I wold not let my 12 year old read it. Maybe 15 or 16, but not 12.

I did enjoy the book. It is powerful, moving, and will make you stop and think. I do recommend you read it. Please be cautious when letting your young adults read this. Read it first and decide for yourself.

Feel free to visit the Author's website to learn more about him and his works. Go here: http://members.authorsguild.net/juliuslester/

Afrin Pure Sea Review

AS many of you know, I am a bzzagent. The bzzagent company will send products for me to review. I give honest reviews on their products (good or bad). They have teamed up with Afrin to send me a new product: Afrin Pure Sea Nasal Rinse.

Now at first I thought... WHAT!?! A nasal rinse! EWWW! I mean come on.

About the product:

You can find this in the cough and cold isle of your local stores.Afrin pure sea is 100% purified sea water that has gone through a sterilizing filtration process to remove impurities and microorganisms. It retains sea waters trace elements and minerals to better match your body' natural chemistry. Pure sea is free of drugs or preservatives and can be used up to 4 times a day.

So says the company.

Here is what I think:

I have used this product for the past few days. I was very axious to try it at first.
You are supposed to stand (tilting over sideways) over your sink and spay this stuff up yourupper nostril. It then runs out the bottom nostril taking the "gunk" with it. Then switch postitions and sides. Now, I must admit I as skeptical! Who has a "dirty nose"? My nose doesn't have that nasty stuff in it. I keep a clean nose!

The nozzle is comfortable. It caused me no discomfort whatsoever. The "sea water" was a little cold, but it was fine. It was like going swimming and getting little bit of water up your nose. Let me tell you, There was "stuff". The nasal rinse worked. After I was finished flushing my nose I had to blow it to get all of the water out. After use, I could breathe more clearly. It helped clean out things that normal blowing doesn't reach. My nose, however, did feel a little dry after each use.

Overall, I was very pleased with the results. It was something I didn't thnk I would enjoy, but I did. Afrin pure Sea Nasal wash did what it said it would and I like it. I think everyone should try it.

I have 8 coupons for $3.00 off any one Afrin pure sea Nasal Rinse expires 6/30/09.

If you would like one of the Coupons leave a comment with you email address and I will contact you.

Give it a try!

Review: Rachel's Tears: 10th Anniversary Edition: The Spiritual Journey of Columbine Martyr Rachel Scott

Rachel's Tears: 10th Anniversary Edition

The Spiritual Journey of Columbine Martyr Rachel Scott
Trade Paper

"I am not going to apologize for speaking the name of Jesus . . . If I have to sacrifice everything . . . I will." -Rachel Scott

The Columbine tragedy in April 1999 pierced the heart of our country. We later learned that the teenage killers specifically targeted Rachel Scott and mocked her Christian faith on their chilling, homemade videotapes. Rachel Scott died for her faith. Now her parents talk about Rachel's life and how they have found meaning in their daughter's martyrdom in the aftermath of the school shooting. Rachel's Tears comes from a heartfelt need to celebrate this young girl's life, to work through the grief and the questions of a nation, and to comfort those who have been touched by violence in our schools today. Using excerpts and drawings from Rachel's own journals, her parents offer a spiritual perspective on the Columbine tragedy and provide a vision of hope for preventing youth violence across the nation.

What an amazing story. This books tugs at your heart through every page. If this one doesn't make you cry... you might not have a heart.

Rachel's story was a real eye opener for me. This book isn't only the story of a girl who died for her beliefs, but a challenge to show loves to those often overlooked. This book will make you reevaluate your walk in faith, and want to be stronger and grow closer to God. It is truly amazing to read the strength of one girl when, as adults, we just can't seem to stay faithful. I recommend this book to everyone especially school aged children. It can teach us all a thing or two. Get your Kleenex ready and close by for this one!

The above Synopsis was Borrowed from http://www.thomasnelson.com/consumer/product_detail.asp?sku=1400313066
As a member of the Thomas Nelson Review team I was lucky enough to ge to review this movie. It was wonderful! Not only did it teach about being different and loving the way God made us, but it also teaches working together. It was a warm and wonderful movie. My children (ages 12 - 4) Loved it! My four year old watched it 3 times in a row!!! During the moive the characters kept reffering to a cake that they loved. Well, after the movie was over the recipe for the cake was given! How neat. Now I can discuss this movie and it's moral points while making something from the movie! Cool!
I highly recommend this movie to everyone (even if you don't have kids)!

Neutrogna Cosmetics Review

Neutrogena® Cosmetics Review
I am a buzzagent for http://www.bzzagent.com/. They send me products to review and I review them for you. I recently had the chance to review Neutrogena Cosmetics. I was lucky enough to be sent a full size:
1. Neutrogena mineral sheers concealer kit.
2. Neutrogena nourishing eye quad in Tea Biscuit.
3. Neutrogena nourishing eye liner in Brown Sugar.
and
4. Neutorgena Healthy Volume Mascara in Carbon Black.

I will go through these in order. Please remember I have not been chosen to give a glowing review no matter what I think. I have been chosen to give my honest opinion. This is my honest opinion of the product.
The Neutrogena concealer kit was ok. I was not overly impressed. It did cover well, but it left a spotty cover. It didn't blend well for my liking. It looked to me like someone had bipped a needle in it and put dot by dot under my eyes. I was not a fan of this product.
I liked the Neutrogena eye quad (tea biscuit). I usually wear less neutral tones, but I enjoyed it. It had a great, smooth cover. The package had great instructions on ow to acheive different looks on the back. The one thing i didn't care for was the included applicator. It hasvery harsh sponge tip. It made my eyes itch and feel raw when I used it. I am not allergic to the materials, it was just that rough.
I loved the eye liner and it's features. It had a wonderful, smooth coverage and looked great! I love the rubber smudger on the ehd and the built in sharpener! It is very easy to apply and I had no problems with it.
I am not a mascara person. I don't wear mascara because of the running, clumps, and stickiness. I love the Neutrogena healthy volume mascara! It was super easy to apply. It coated well, and didnot leave clumps. My eyes didn't feel sticky, nor did it run. I love it, love t, love it!
Overall, I enjoyed the Neutrogena products. With only a few set backs, they were an overall joy. I was even complimented on the way my eyes looked by 3 people. I was only out and about for maybe 2 hours. I will buy several of these products.
I hope my Review was helpful to someone. I was as honest as possible.

Guidelines and Disclaimer for What the 4h reviews

To My Readers:

If you want to get in touch with me, please, feel free to leave a comment. You can also email me at any time. I love to hear from you!

I am just a reviewer. I am not an author. If you are trying to contact the author to any book I review, I am not it.

To Authors and Publishers and Product Companies:

I am more than happy to accept book and product review copies and catalogs from authors and publishers or product companies. I am also happy to participate in blog tours, author interviews, and guest posts and host giveaways. Due to the number of requests I receive, I am selective about the titles and products I accept.

This blog, A Bookish Mom,and it’s accompanying website is a voluntary, part time effort written by a lover of books and products. I’m an avid reader with 5 children and as such I review every single book I read and products I receive including picture and board books, middle grade, young adult, fiction, non-fiction, memoir, parenting, etc. I normally do not read romance, chick-lit, or erotica. I don't care for books that are vulgar, overly sexual, and has an unusual amount of foul language. I do not consider e-books or pdf’s for review. I will consider self-published books. My acceptance of a review copy does not guarantee that I will write a review. If I finish reading the book, I will write a review. If I read more than half of the book but discontinue I will write a synopsis and then a semi-review as I state reasons why I could not continue reading it. Every once in a while I receive a book for review and realize right away that I’m not a good match. I will try, but can’t guarantee, to pass these books onto other bloggers for review. I also do not guarantee that the review will be positive. It will always be my honest opinion of the book or product. I always include product picture or book cover, link to author/prooduct website, synopsis, and my personal thoughts about the book/product in each review. I may take the synopsis from the book cover or dust jacket.

I try to read the review titles/products that I receive in a timely manner but it sometimes may take a while. If the book is an ARC, I will try to review the book in the month surrounding its release date, before the book is published. The exception to this is blog tours and author interviews in which I will post the review on a specified date.

I do not receive any compensation for writing reviews. I do, however, appreciate the donation of an extra book/ product for giveaways for my readers, or an autographed copy of a book for myself every once in a while.

Please feel free to contact me with your review request. I look forward to working with you. You can email me at abookishmom {at} yahoo {dot} com
